Spaghetti Pie~

I'd never heard of spaghetti pie till I moved to Indiana.  This seemed to be a popular dish among families here...and typically made with a  crust of spaghetti, a layer of cottage cheese followed by ground beef, spaghetti sauce and cheese.  I clipped this recipe from the paper years ago...this version appealed to me as the cottage cheese was replaced with sour cream.  It is one of those dishes I whip up when I have a cup of leftover spaghetti sauce in the freezer. I think my favorite part is the very edge of the crust...slightly eggy, with few crispy noodles.

Spaghetti Pie...source unknown

6 ounces spaghetti, cooked and cooled
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1/4 cup Parmesan
1 cup sour cream
1 pound ground beef, cooked, crumbled and drained
4-8 ounces shredded mozzarella
8 ounces meatless spaghetti sauce/marinara

Preheat oven to 350º.  Grease a 9 inch pie plate.

Combine spaghetti, eggs and Parmesan. Pour mixture into pie plate.  Top with sour cream, then ground beef, spaghetti sauce, and finally the mozzarella.

Bake for 25 minutes.

Serves 4.

Yum..how perfectly sliced yours is! I've made the Jessica Seinfeld version, with broccoli. But yours is a heartier version that my little family would enjoy.

I saw on Twitter that you asked about the no-movement on foodbuzz, I've noticed it too. Nothing since January 27. ?!

Good day to you :)

oh my the memories this just brought back, although my family never made this or I. My best friends mom did in high school. I use to look forward to going there for dinner as this was one heck of a tasty dish. Bet the kids and hubby would enjoy this one too... thanks for giving me that flash back.. boy do I miss those years!

Midwest food is a category all by itself....delicious and comforting. I haven't had spaghetti pie since I lived in St. Louis. Yours looks SO good.

Believe it or not but I've had macaroni pie! Guess it stemmed from the same idea for this spaghetti pie. Since it's called a pie, why doesn't it have a proper pie crust top? Oof, suddenly that sounds overly filling.
Looks seriously good tho but I think I'll have my spaghetti as is. :D

I love this idea. When I have left over spaghetti I save it and then add veggies to it and bake it like I pie. Those cripy bit of pasta are the best.

I remember eating a similar dish a potluck a long time ago, but I never made it. It's a good way to use leftover pasta and sauce.:) Thanks for sharing!

This looks fantastic. I wasn't too thrilled as I was reading 'cottage cheese,' but you got me back when you said this recipe used sour cream. I'm sold.

Spaghetti is one of my all time faves from childhood. This would be a great change to serve even for guests. Thanks for posting this one!

Its also new to me Lizzy but your pics says it all that it was worth the try and looks superb. I will surely enjoy it too.

you have a similar thing in my Facebook album with macaroni and tomato sauce baked together in the oven. Extremely yummy and quick and simple.
I often just mix pasta with sour cream and eggs and grated cheese and put in the oven for 20 minutes. I'm a simple raccoon :)
But my favourite pasta is with potatoes, very typical for my Vojvodina, I must explain it to you once...

Wow... what a cool way to eat spaghetti. You know I love me some spaghetti. I am definitely putting this on my must try list. I think my kids will love it. :) Have a great Tuesday!!

I have a similar recipe in a couple of old recipe books. I don't know why I haven't tried it yet, as yours looks delicious. When my kids were young they didn't like anything that resembled a casserole.

I saw a similar recipe of this pie in one of the Chinese cookbook that I borrowed but that pie looks very thin :P :D This is another great way to cook spaghetti ;)

I never heard of spaghetti pie until I moved to MN! But they have been popping up in Italian cookbooks as a way to use up leftover spaghetti. (But I won't go the cottage cheese route.) Saving this - because it is a sure-fire family-pleaser!

I have never heard of spaghetti pie. But I have to tell you that it sounds really good. Specially on a cold day like today.

Must be a Midwestern thing, but it sounds great. I love the substitution of sour cream for the cottage cheese. I wonder how a bit of cream cheese would be as well?

I've made a version of this a long time ago and it does sound a little strange at first but really, what's not to like? noodles, sauce, cheese and meat? Yum! I agree that the crispy noodles are the best part!

Liz, it sounds too good to be true! I'm sure this is the kind of dish that pleases even the pickiest people. I must remember to try it soon.

Spaghetti pie is one of our family favorites. I have to make it without the meat but it is still delicious with all that cheese.

Lizzy, This is a terrific recipe. I am always trying to think of new ideas to use up cooked pasta and spaghetti sauce. I also love this recipe because it is quick and easy - something you can whip up when time just slips by you. Thanks for the great post.

This is a perfect weeknight meal...I always seem to have a cup of sauce left every time I open a jar of Rao's sauce. This is the perfect use for that!

Tina said...

Not sure why, but this looks so much tastier than regular spaghetti! Perhaps it is just the cheese on top or the shape..Anyhow this looks like a great one to serve on a busy weeknight. Saved this recipe!

Actually, I used to have a spaghetti pie recipe, as well at least 30yrs ago...that's ages ago, and mine came from one of those little church binder cookbooks but have gotten rid of that book a long time ago. Love yours with all that yummy cheese on the top, and really made in a pie pan...looks so incredible!

Spaghetti pie was, hilariously, the first dinner I ever made my husband - back in the day when he was still just a boyfriend. I didn't know what he'd think, but he loved it! I make mine with ricotta. It's a keeper. So is he. :)
